How do you know if you have found “The One”?

How to know if you’ve found THE ONE

Ahh, February, the month of love, this post is for all the lovers out there, those who are in love, about to be or currently engaged and about to be married.  They are the lucky ones who found their piece of heaven on earth.  Yes, LOVE…that one word that makes the world go round.  It brings out the best in us.  So, you think you’re in love but are wondering if you’ve found the right one?  This is for you.  ( Be sure to check out our tribute slideshow below.)

Recently I stumbled upon a movie (I can’t remember the title!) with the premise that if you register your likes and preferences in an agency and wear a bracelet, it will count down to the time and actually beep when you encounter your true soul mate. It was quite interesting and had me thinking, wow, what if indeed it was possible to find your soul mate in (gasp!)  junior high? It was an interesting premise.  What if there was a sure fire way to increase your chances of happiness in an unknowable future?  There is so much advice on how to know.  We’ve all heard the common “When you’ve found the right one, you’ll know”. But that doesn’t really help much does it?  So upon looking around a little bit, here are some of my favorite things that are commonly said to be essential in knowing if you’ve found the one.  For sure, there are a lot more, feel free to add your own criteria by commenting below.

  1. Know thyself, once you do then you know what you want.
  2. How does your loved one make you feel about yourself?
  3. Does your loved one help you nurture your dreams and try new things?
  4. Can you talk about anything and everything?
  5. Does your loved one excite you and make you come alive?
  6. Does he/she love you and accept you as you are?
  7. Is this relationship different from your past ones?
  8. Are they genuinely interested in what you are doing?
  9. If you are not dating him/her, would you be friends with this person?
  10. How do they treat their family and your family?
  11. Would you consider this person as a co-parent to your child/children?
  12. Do you complement each other?  Opposites do attract, to a certain degree.

Let’s face it. “No one is perfect. Everyone has baggage. Making that decision is like skydiving: It’s a crazy thing to do if you think about it logically, but you pray that the ride down will be exhilarating and that you’ll land on your feet. People take that leap of faith with naïve confidence.” –Rachel Greenwald

This one is one of my faves.

“A relationship is about give and take, yes. But if he is the one, he will protect you and make you a better person, even if you’re the only person stopping yourself from going ahead in life.

All of us suffer from sudden bouts of irritation or frustration, both men and women.  But most men have a lower tolerance for mood swings and unpredictable behavior. Can your man smile with you and put up with you? Can he shower you with affection when you’re feeling lonely, and put up with your tantrums when you’re irritated?  You’ll know if he is the one when he can bear with your tantrums.

How to know if he or she is the one? You’d never know until you take the plunge and give them a chance to love you.  But remember to communicate, learn and give love a chance to blossom into a great one.”- Lovepanky.com

John and Laura

John and Laura got married in their own private ranch in Scottsdale with the gorgeous natural desert as their backdrop.  The couple spent months renovating to prepare their beautiful property for the wedding.  They brought in a caterer who prepared all the sumptuous food in their kitchen.  Surrounded by their families and friends and with their furry “children”, two horses (can’t recall their names) and two dogs, one they call old man and the other a German Shepherd named Jake, (yes he is the puppy in the story, now fully gown as you will see in the photos) they celebrated their wedding day in style.

How We Met

It was a warm Saturday afternoon middle of March and I met my friend Monica in Old Town Scottsdale. She had a friend from California visiting and we were planning to go to a Spring Training baseball game together. The game sold out so we walked over to the Arts Festival. We walked around for a couple of hours and then decided to grab a cocktail at the Old Town Tavern. Monica mentioned that she had a high school friend who was having his 50th Birthday and invited him to come down and join us. Although John wasn’t aware of it, I knew she was trying to play matchmaker and I was not at all thrilled. John accepted her invitation and came down to meet us. Monica had mentioned that he lived up near me in North Scottsdale and that he had a ranch with horses. The night went on and I was getting hungry and decided to break away from the group and go for sushi. John came running after me thinking I was leaving and always the gentleman, felt someone should walk me to my car. I told him I was starving and was actually just heading for something to eat. He asked if he could join me and I agreed. We had a nice dinner and then met back up with the group. I was getting pretty tired and since I had a few cocktails was going to catch a cab home. John recommended that he just drop me off on his way home and then he would come back in the morning and take me back to my car because he was going to go pick up his new puppy and it would be no problem. I agreed and so we decided to stop back in Old Town Tavern for a glass of wine before we headed North. Monica walked by on her way home and stopped in to say goodnight. She was grinning from ear to ear. She later told me that she could see the sparks flying between us.

We had a really good time that evening and the next morning as promised he came and picked me up and dropped me at my car. As I thanked him for his kindness, he asked me if he could call me or maybe take me to dinner. I told him that would be nice and to stay in touch.

Off he went to pick up his puppy which was a gift to himself for his 50th Birthday.

We kept in touch for the next couple of weeks during which we made plans to have dinner at his ranch. Well as you can see…dinner was fantastic and we have been inseparable ever since.

Serendipity!

How I asked her to marry me

For all of you who don’t know Laura well lets just say she IS the sharpest tack in the box. I have always tried to catch her off guard doing or saying things out of context. Surprising her with flowers at work or grabbing her in the grocery store for a dance if a good song comes on over the loud speaker. If I don’t she usually will know what’s coming. Instead of setting up a romantic dinner at a restaurant or other similiar setting where she might guess what was coming, I decided to once again catch her off guard.

Laura had to fly to Chicago for the day for work. I knew she would be tired and hungry when she arrived back home. I was suppose to be at a Posse meeting (I ride horses with friends in Search and Rescue) but instead I surprised her with dinner and a nice bottle of wine at her apartment. After dinner we were sitting on the couch watching TV. Laura was tired and laying on my lap while I rubbed her sore back from the flight. I had bent a paper clip into the shape of a ring and had it on my finger. As I rubbed her back I scratched her with the ring. I apologized and slid it on her ring finger telling her I had been bored waiting for her and was playing with the clip. I also mentioned that it looked kind of formal on her finger and removed it so I could rub that hand. When I finished I slipped her engagement ring on her finger instead and continued to rub the other hand. It wasn’t very long before the lights in the kitchen flashed off the diamonds in the ring and she noticed that it was something other than a paper clip on her finger.

She sat straight up and asked “Oh My God What’s This”? I promptly got down on one knee and asked if she would make it official and agree to be my wife? Fortunately she said yes!

You are most welcome Laura! Glenn and I really enjoyed shooting your wedding. You planned everything perfectly! I still have clear memories of how Jake kept watching over your dress, such a sweet dog you have; Glenn thirstily drinking what he thought was lemon water that turned out to be a pretty strong mojito; the scrumptious crab salad I couldn’t stop eating, I could go on and on. Most of all, I remember the fantastic sunset you and John were blessed with that day and how you said, “Thank you Daddy!”. Have a fantastic first year and even more fantastic ones there after!!!:-)
